One of the problems people have with XMPP is with LAN to WAN routers 
that do not implement DNS properly.  I don't remember the correct 
sequence for Google properly, but this timeout is worrying.  I seem to 
remember earlier replies on this list suggesting hard coding the result 
of this query, which you might want to try searching for.

DNS queries should produce results or fail quickly.  They shouldn't time 
out.

Explicitly setting your ISP as DNS server may also help.

Pidgin is not a service, it is a multi-service client program.  Google 
IK is the service in this case.
