Hi Gene,

Thanks for getting the backtrace.  It looks like something horribly wrong is going on with your XMPP account, causing some kind of memory corruption since the 25th of December.  The crash consistently happens in the same place in the code, but the cause of it is a bit of a question mark.  It looks like you moved Pidgin from the Program Files (x86) folder to your Program Files folder on the 14th of January; was this intentional?

Do you think you could give another go at getting a debug log?  I'll post some screenshots to help guide you though.

First open the command prompt, by pressing Start+R

Then enter cmd into the run window and press OK.  In that command prompt, type   cd /D "C:\Program Files\Pidgin"   then run Pidgin with the -d flag into a log file, eg  pidgin -d > c:\pidgin.log

This should then create a log file at c:\pidgin.log in Explorer:

If you could then attach the pidgin.log file to an email back, then we should be able to see exactly what the server or client is sending that could have caused this behaviour.  It could be that you've stumbled across a case of Pidgin crashing when the server sends something malicious.

Sorry to hear you had trouble with getting a debug log.  Unfortunately without either the debug log or the Pidgin.rpt file, there's not much we can do to help.  The Pidgin.rpt file should be the easiest one to get to and attach to an email, as this file is already created every time there's a crash in Pidgin.  Just as a reminder, that file lives at %appdata%\.purple\  (you can copy-paste that path into Explorer to jump straight to the Pidgin config folder).

Unfortunately as you've found, uninstalling/reinstalling Pidgin and clearing out any registry files won't help with any crashes if there's a particular plugin or server you're using that's causing a crash.  If you could let us know what version of Pidgin you're using, by right-clicking on the Pidgin.exe file in your %programfiles%\Pidgin folder, going to the Details tab and finding the "Product version" entry.  It would also help to know what kind of account you're connecting to in Pidgin; XMPP or IRC or something like that.

I have worked on this for a few hours now and nothing is working as outlined on the link.  I did check processes in Task Manager and Pidgin is not running.  I have removed it,  deep cleaned the registry, reloaded it several times.  Still no joy.  Everything else works on my computer.  Pidgin worked for a month and now this.

I can’t spend any more time on this – I have to get to work so will deal with this when I have nothing to do (which is rare).  I have informed my management that I am off of Pidgin.

Could you check in Task Manager that Pidgin is or isn't running?

If it's not running, it could be crashing when it opens.  Just to double check, can you follow the instructions at https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/TipsForBugReports#ObtainingaDebugLog to get a debug log, and attach it along with the Pidgin.rpt file that lives at %appdata%\.purple in an email reply back to us.  Hopefully one of those two will shed some light on where the problem is.
