 What you're describing sounds like a workaround to something that isn't
 working correctly about the NTLM authentication, in which case, the
 correct solution is to figure out what is wrong and fix it.

 Making note (for myself mostly) of
 [http://davenport.sourceforge.net/ntlm.html a useful document] to figure
 out what isn't right.

 The libpurple NTLM auth. stuff specifies the incorrect value for
 WORKSTATION; this may be the problem.  It will try to extract the DOMAIN
 portion the username specified in the proxy settings (username is in the
 form `DOMAIN\USERNAME`) - are you specifying this correctly?
