 I don't think this really needs to be a preference.

 I also don't use status messages all that much, so the ability to edit
 them isn't something I use frequently, but it really isn't that big of a
 deal.

 I don't see how it causes any real problem - you set it and move on - if
 it takes 2 seconds to actually kick in, what difference does that make?
