 If you have a look at trillian, you can see how it is done there. It takes
 all screen names that are the same and puts them into one. From there, you
 can set a default (which will be used when you double click the screen
 name) or right click -> send from to choose which of your screen names to
 send the message from.

 It think that if this type of feature was implemented properly, it could
 be used in such a way that it would not be horrible for someone that did
 not want it. However, I think you are right in that it should be an option
 or plugin.
