 Thanks, that didn't work either.  :(

 I know the answer is in some thread, but I can't find it.  I can connect
 using MSN Messenger client but not using Pidgin.  I looks like the server
 "messenger.hotmail.com"  resolves to a different server.  We use MSN
 internally as a corporate messenger, if that helps.
