 What do you mean exactly by "dumping themselves"?
 They should be written every time a change is made (and changes are
 effectively made every time you run pidgin).

 Your solution to make the files readonly and owned by the administrator
 just means that  they will just stay the way they are - your local buddy
 list ordering, aliasing and such will be lost every time.  I wouldn't
 consider this "fixed".
