#4051: AIM screenname formatting sometimes removed

Pidgin occasionally removes the formatting of AIM screennames when
displaying them in the buddy list. For instance, if a buddy formats his
screenname as "John Smith", Pidgin shows it as "johnsmith" with (I assume)
spaces and capitalization removed. These are screennames only, no aliasing
 involved.

This doesn't happen all the time and it doesn't happen for every buddy,
but it does seem like a Pidgin problem because when I asked a buddy
whether she had changed her screenname formatting, she said she saw it
correctly on her end (using the official AIM client) and when I restarted
Pidgin, I saw the correct version (and I hadn't changed anything). Of the
other buddies with formatting removed, after the restart some of them had
reverted to the correct version and some were still incorrect.

I've tried deleting the buddy and adding them back with what I know is the
correct formatting but it doesn't have any effect, Pidgin still displays
the stripped version. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas on how to
 help narrow this down.

I first noticed it on Pidgin 2.2.1, Ubuntu 7.10.
