Comment:

 You can join a muc room on conference.pidgin.im from your sun.com account
 assuming the sun.com server has server-to-server support turned on. You
 don't need an account on the appropriate server (which wouldn't be
 conference.pidgin.im as a log in server anyway) that's one of the key
 points of XMPP being distributed. AIM has nothing to do with this so
 whether that works or not is unrelated.

 If, as you say, the log you posted is complete then that is why things
 aren't working, the chatroom is never responding to you so pidgin is
 waiting for a response. If other people see you in the chatroom when you
 auto-join then the server is seeing the join presence and just failing to
 respond to you.
