Not sure I follow you ... we have a chat room, but I can't click on the
buddy - messages just appear as in any IM window - no 'clickable' buddy
names. I click on the buddy in 'buddy list' window. Anyway, now for
whatever the reason, when I click on the buddy in the 'buddy list' I see
all the old logs, except for the 'unsolicited' one sent by the buddy. It
seems somehow pidgin is creating another log in some situations (like the
'unsolicited' send) that does not coalesce with the main log associated
with the buddy.

"chatname at chatserver.tld/buddyname" - the log is being saved with that
user (not "buddyname" directly). This is because the name in the chat
isn't necessarily related to the user's JID on the server.
