 If you look in your log directory
 (`~/.purple/logs/jabber/account at server.tld/`), I bet you'll find an entry
 for the buddy in the form of `chatname at chatserver.tld%2fbuddyname` because
 that user contacted you through the chat room (by clicking on your name in
 the chatroom user listing) instead of sending you an IM through the
 "normal" process.  Messages received like this doesn't appear in the logs
 for the buddy in your buddy list because technically the message didn't
 come from that buddy (there may be a way that this could be improved, but
 I don't know offhand).  Hopefully this makes sense.
