Comment (by deryni):
Most every even remotely major UI change causes this much commotion (or
more) among some subset of pidgin users. And as always the key is to look
at this in perspective. Since February 24th of this year pidgin has
received over 1 million downloads from the Sourceforge page alone (not
counting anyone using pidgin from their linux distribution or local
staging area like we have here at work)
So even if a thousand people commented negatively about this it would be a
drop in the bucket, that is and always was my point.
I have explained the advantages of the automatic resizing numerous times,
no one pays me any attention. To sum up, manual resizing and automatic
resizing cannot work simultaneously (at least not that we were able to
make work). Automatic resizing allows people to keep the input area small
enough that they need not waste space in their IM window when they don't
type long messages while simultaneously allowing them to see the entirety
of a longer message without needing to use scrollbars. It gracefully
handles the pasting of large blocks of text in a way that is orders of
magnitude more useful/helpful if you then need to do anything with the
text and don't always keep your entry area large. It removes the need for
people to interact with the input area sizing at all (which streamlines
the usage of the window which makes things easier to use and more
immediate to the goal of sending an IM). (I said some parts of this in the
second paragraph of http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4986#comment:64 but
as I said I don't expect people to actually read what I write anymore.)
You, and the other reasonable people out there, are fine with it being a
plugin the people behind funpidgin are clearly not. As, similarly, the
people who were posting on #4986 until recently seemed not to be. And
again, I don't believe the demand is really high enough to warrant taking
maintenance on, and I only expect the demand to drop as more people get
used to the automatic resizing. I do think the plugin should have a better
page than the ticket though. It should probably be put in the wiki.
