I did read you comment and thought that preference was enabled by default.
I must have enabled it by mistake then, because it was checked in my
installation.
I still think that this should be noted somewhere :)

created is that GTK+ only allows for one menu accelerator key per-item (at
least as far as I am aware) and without grabbing one of the keys in pidgin
directly (which is something we try to avoid whenever possible) the
preference must overwrite whatever binding is there currently (even if the
user already changed ctrl-w to something else).
