I rather enjoyed that last reply -- it made me think about this for a
second. But hear this. I'm a "bottom-tab" kinda guy, and I actually went
from using bottom tabs to using top tabs because of the way Pidgin has
been acting ever since that info pane came around or whatever happened.
Don't get me wrong, I like the info pane! But I feel there is definitely a
duplication of information and waste of real estate (because of the tab
bar), especially with horizontal tabs to the left and right with that big
grey area that forms when there's only 1 tab open.
Further, the only reasons I've gotten (and understood) to why it should be
as it is now is that if you're closing ALL open tabs, you would have to
move your mouse pointer "too far" -- to the X-button of your window
manager -- to close the final conversation if the tab bar disappeared. But
I say: If you want to close all tabs at once, you can just make a single
click... on the X-button of your window manager. :D
And about coloring; I don't know if I'm understanding the issue, but would
it be so complicated to make the info pane hold event coloring just as
tabs do?
Putting it simply, what I believe should be done is to remove the tab bar
when only one conversation is open. The reason is that it creates
duplicate information (regardless of bar position) and it requires space.
Or perhaps create an option for it in the Preferences, to please the
entire public (Firefox style?), i.e. either the tab bar always shows, or
is removed when the window has only 1 conversation. It would then be
possible to customize your windows to be really sleek, perhaps with no
info pane and tab bar removed when 1 conv. open, or on the other hand be
very informative with tab bar open and info pane as well. And everything
in between.
Thanks for paying attention if you got this far! :-)
