Comment:

 Pidgin will send the text as you type it (i.e `<` will become `<`).

 There is a "DeWYSIWYGification" plugin in the [http://plugin-
 pack.pidgin.im plugin pack] that allows you to type html and have it
 sent/rendered as typed.

 You can also just use the Insert->Link functionality to insert a link with
 a description.
