Comment (by bejones):
The Tablet PC Input Panel (TIP) is a handwriting recognition and on-screen
keyboard tool built into Windows. It can be docked at the edge of the
screen or a floating panel. The floating TIP is opened by a button that
appears when a text input box has focus and the stylus/pen is used. The
docked TIP is opened with an icon in the system tray. The floating TIP is
easier to use since it's positioned near the text box and automatically
expands to fit input. More detail and several screenshots (of WinXP Tablet
Edition) can be found
[http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/windowsxp_tabletpc2005.asp here].
Some of the differences in Vista are listed
[http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/tabletpc.mspx
here]. Handwriting recognition support is somewhat lacking in Linux, but
[http://risujin.org/cellwriter/ CellWriter] is similar to the TIP.
In Pidgin (all versions), the button to open the floating TIP never
appears. All text input is done with the docked TIP, which can be
inconvenient. I think the problem is that Windows doesn't recognize the
text areas since Pidgin uses gtk rather than native controls. The
[http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905027.aspx MSDN Tablet
PC] website might be useful for determining the cause.
