 Indeed it isn't a conversation window doing this, it is the Buddy List.
 Although I've now succeeded in configuring fvwm2 to not focus on and warp
 to windows that have URGENT set, it's now that way for all windows.  If I
 ever want some other app. to have the focus/warp behaviour I'm going to
 have to figure out how to do it for only those (seems possible in fvwm2,
 but a pain).

 What's so hard about a "use Urgent hint" option ?  When you want to change
 the behaviour for just one application it's much easier to do so using its
 configuration.
