Comment:

 We can definitely do this for 3.0.0. I'm not sure if we can do it earlier,
 as we'd potentially stop working on some older distros (and as much as I
 dislike it, we seem to want to support really old stuff). I'm assigning
 this to nosnilmot for his opinion.
