 Hmmm, I see now that Pidgin does compute which contact is used for merged
 contacts.

 I figured since there was an option "Show Protocol Icons" some people must
 have been interested in this option, and my first instinct as a normal
 user of Pidgin was that it was odd that my merged contacts don't show all
 the protocols I merged (some contacts prefer it if I chat to them through
 ICQ, others through MSN, YIM, etc). Thanks to your link though, I now have
 a better insight to the mergin.
