one, and it certainly doesn't specify an old Windows specific font. Are
you sure the user isn't choosing that font intentionally? Or at least
choosing some font that WLM can't display directly and is substituting
that font instead?

I've tested with ubuntu 8.10 RC, by default it sends text in "MS san
Serif". Changing fonts to Bitstream Vera monospace (the only linux font
family I presently have installed on my XP machine) on the only place I
saw (Options->Conversation) changed the font displayed on Pidgen but
didn't change the font being sent out.
The results were observed on two diferent Windows XP machines, being more
noticable on mine since I'm using a large TFT screen which make font
rendering without Clear Type very pour.
If indeed users can chose the outgoing font it's non obvious. It's
possible that chosing "MS San Serif" was done because it was present in
all windows versions (acording to wikipedia the ttf is only present in
Windows 2000 and up), still in todays time with TFT being the norm "MS San
Serif" stands out like a win16 app on a vista desktop, and that ain't
preaty :P
