Comment:

 The Windows Live Messenger client does not experience this problem at all.
 I don't understand why a third party app is forced to.

 I agree with the solution.  I would add that that box should be checked
 off by default (as it seems to be in WLM, although there is no option, as
 usual with base Microsoft products).
