 By the way, I do experience that GTK+ bug but only when trying to perform
 searches in the contact list. I type in one letter to begin the search and
 the entire Pidgin application becomes unresponsive to mouse clicks and
 keyboard strokes. However, I think that this bug is one layer deeper, so
 to speak, such that it acts before the GTK+ bug has time act.

 This makes me suspect that even if this bug is fixed, we will still be
 stuck with the GTK+ bug. :-/
