Comment:

 The more I think about this, the less I want to make a popup indicating
 failure to check.  We don't want to get bug reports based on either our
 server being slow/down or the user's configuration (like yours) preventing
 the check.  I think we'll just leave it as it is for now - there isn't
 really any major issue that I can see with this.
