New description:

 In Pidgin 2.5.x when new message was received icon in notification area
 starts blinking, icon next to menu appears, username in buddy list is
 bolded.
 In Pidgin 2.6.1 icons next to menu and in notification area appears but
 username is not bolded. It is not possible to see which user sent the
 message just by looking at the contact list.

 Additional info:
 Using Ubuntu 8.10, Pidgin updated to 2.6.1 from Pidgin's PPA

Comment(by kosciak):

 Blinking of the icon in the tray/notification area can be turned on and
 off - right click on the Pidgin's icon in tray (notification area) and you
 can set it to "Blink on New Messages"

 Checked the 2.5.2 version and there's no changing of the user's icon like
 in Miranda IM (where an envelope icon appears instead of
 Available/Away/etc icon of the user who has sent the message).
 But still, without bolding a name on the buddy list there's no way to know
 which user sent a message without checking the icons (in tray or next to
 menu).
