Comment:

 I just upgraded pidgin 3 hours ago. Problem still exists. Pushing the
 release application on the ticket up to 3.5.6.

 I monitored the prefs.xml file for changes. I made copies of the file for
 each stage you specified. I ran diff between each file. No changes were
 found between the files.

 Here is the debug info for when I make the change in the file:
