 After some further investigation (and testing of various other apps) here
 is how I believe this feature may be improved.

 Restore the position of the previous conv window unless a conv window
 already exists in which case allow the window manager to perform the
 placement.

 I believe this to be optimal in most cases, and modify the patch as such
 with some effort.
