Comment:

 If the system tray setting is "always" this should be working correctly if
 pidgin is actually able to embed the tray icon. In a few previous versions
 pidgin was failing to detect when the tray icon was failing to embed
 correctly. That error was recently fixed I believe. It is possible you are
 seeing the result of that.

 When this was last working did you actually have a tray icon for pidgin
 visible? Do you currently have a tray icon visible for pidgin?
