Comment:

 Pidgin will never resend messages "until they're received".
 That's...insane, and just prone to all sorts of horrible failure
 conditions that involve continually sending messages to people (or even
 "just" multiple times).

 There ''is'' an XEP which is able to deal with lossy network connections
 (XEP-0198: Stream Management is Standards Track (Draft, 2010-03-05) See:
 http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0198.html), but Google Talk does not
 support it, so its implementation in libpurple would not help you any.

 Lastly, if Google Talk doesn't send us those 'missed' messages when we
 reconnect (which might be considered "offline messages", I guess, except
 not), I don't know how to get them to deliver them when you reconnect.
