 I'm glad I'm not the only person with this opinion. I'd like to see this
 bug revisited.  :)

 Most other clients have their status box always visible, and completely
 independent of the status selector, implying the obvious, that messages
 are often completely unrelated to one's status.  I think this is the best
 way, because people are able to change their personal message without
 having to change their status (even if it's the same status as before) in
 order to reveal the text box.  Selecting a status from the list could
 bring focus to the text box as soon as it's been picked, but that status
 should change immediately without any further user action.  Users may also
 choose to hide the message text box entirely to save screen space.
