 Same issue on WinXP SP3 with Pidgin 2.7.1.
 Did reboot and reinstall.
 Changed protocol parameters (SSL on/off, proxy on/off).
 Tried it on three separate AOL accounts.
 All the same stuff.
 Buddy list loads for all other protocols, but not AOL.
