 I just had to kill pidgin.  It seemed deadlocked and not updating the UI.
 It was otherwise very active as I could tell my strace'ing it.  It seemed
 to be doing pretty much everything normally except updating the UI.

 I will attach a stack trace of the process as this was happening.
