 Thanks. I was blissfully ignorant of this option. It was set to "Always",
 which I guess is the default (?).

 But my window manager (ctwm) does not have a "system tray". When the buddy
 list is not up, and my window manager doesn't have a system tray, what
 does pidgin do? Can it figure out that there's no system tray and display
 the buddy list, or even just an icon - or something which will allow me to
 interact with it?

 By the way, it isn't clear to me why the "Show system tray icon" option
 controls the "don't show buddy list on startup" behavior. Shouldn't there
 be a separate option for this?
