 That may be necessary. I was intentionally vague about what a "variant"
 was because I wasn't sure how much the XMPP cases differed. What I'd
 ''really'' like to avoid, though, is having to build multiple shared
 libraries for multiple prpls. It makes the build more complicated than it
 should be.
