 This must be a windows related issue.  I have no idea why this fixed it
 but all I did was install trillan and once I opened up an IM I noticed
 that it too had a small text input area.  I resized the text entry in
 trillian because it allows you to drag to resize and once I did that
 pidgin was now sized properly.
