 How would that help exactly? That dialog doesn't show you what status is
 currently active.

 Can you not just keep your buddy list open since that does in fact show
 that and also lets you change the status? On Windows you can even pin it
 to the side of the screen.

 On non-Windows systems this is really something the envionment/window
 manager should support doing (for any window you like) so that
 applications don't all need to add options for it.
