Comment:

 Can you test to make sure that with this patch in place pidgin correctly
 sets GG accounts to the status that pidgin was quit with and the status
 configured to use at startup (as pidgin is configured) correctly?

 It should as I don't see how this could be related but the last time those
 lines were touched was in a commit claiming to fix that not working.
