 [https://github.com/tdryer/hangups/ Hangups] would be useful here. It's
 still buggy in a number of ways since it's based on reverse-engineering
 the Hangouts protocol, but it does work, and it's all in Python with an
 [https://github.com/tdryer/hangups/blob/master/hangups/client.py abstract
 interface] that looks like it would be relatively easy to use without
 having to reimplement everything.
